I decided to join the Word on the Wards (WoW) program to improve my ability to discuss sensitive topics with patients in a caring and non-judgmental way. As someone aspiring to work in primary care, health counseling and coaching will certainly be integral parts of my job, so I wanted to learn how to address these subjects with respect and understanding.
This experience has been incredibly valuable in my journey to becoming a doctor. Among the many memorable patients I have met, two stand out. One was a wise 100-year-old patient who we discussed fall prevention and home safety with. The other was a patient we educated about managing diabetes and finding suitable exercise options based on their mobility. Collaborating with a physical therapy student during this session was especially meaningful, as they shared their expertise on exercise, which helped both me and the patient learn new ways to stay active and healthy.
The WoW program has significantly influenced my approach to patient care, emphasizing the importance of empathy and effective communication between an interdisciplinary team and with patients. I am very grateful for the opportunity to participate in WoW and will carry the lessons I've learned with me throughout my medical career.
